I decided to put this out for a number of reasons but mainly it's a improvement as to what circulates. The main reason being Will's reels are in prime condition and have never had to be baked over a number of times. The exact lineage of all the 4/71 FE reels are still a mystery so perhaps we will really never know the whole story BUT some low gen reels @ 7.5 ips. have survived in one piece and these are some of them.. According to the story from Wilson and Pat Lee, Peter Kafer and Bill Gadsden "purchased" the supposed masters from a guy named Buddy Miller(now a country musician) and brought them up to the Northwest for them to copy back in 1973. Will's are 7.5 ips. and Pat's are 3.3/4 ips. Nobody for sure knows exactly which were masters since Buddy decided to keep a few for himself which is truly the crux of the mystery or if even Buddy had masters himself. I realize in some circles this is considered heresy but it's true and until Buddy comes forward and flat out states he had masters this should be considered as a possibility. We can only now just listen carefully and try to figure it out that way.. Anyhow please enjoy!
My notes:

This is my first time on this site in my search for info.. I'm a fan of all things reel to reel especally when it comes to the Dead. I recently acquired
...
a box of tapes from these shows, all on Scotch tape with printed artwork and set list on the inside recorded at 71/2ips. They sound amazing! Considering the amount of recording that went on I realize locating the source is a long shot. Just wondering if anyone has any idea on other places for information to track down who may have done this??

3rd night of five "Ladies" shows.
It's the end of the week that things got hot and this is the first indication of that. Two songs from this one were used for the Skull Fuck album
...
and three for Ladies & Gentlemen. 1st set. Truckin' is a surprisingly jazzy version, considering American Beauty hadn't been out long. A tease into Cryptical becomes a straight-faced rendering of Mama Tried. Bertha is the version on Skull Fuck but this is the undubbed original. Same for Bobby McGee, here with the original guitar. China Cat tries to start for nearly a minute but it's the peak of the set (hard to believe it wasn't plucked for Skull Fuck). The 1st Set then has its own Casey Jones encore while the second set has none! (Ladies Disc#4 puts the Bill Graham rap from the 29th here). 2nd Set. The continual breaks and fuckin' around from the first set lay over into the second, mainly from the arrival of Beach Boys, whose middle-of-the-set songs are a disaster and excised for this purpose (nobody is playing OR singing the same verse on Johnny B Goode). After a mediocre show, in typical Dead fashion they come back after the Beach Boys leave and end with one of the best Lovelights ever (in my Top 5, fwiw)! It has a major Pig rap but is also weirdly tightened up. 1st Set: B- 2nd Set: B (not counting seven Beach Boys songs, else D-) Overall = 3 1/2 Stars Highlights: Me & Bobby McGee (undubbed version of Skull Fuck track) China>Rider (25th is better but this is still A-) Me & My Uncle (the one from 29th is on Skull Fuck but this one's better) Dire Wolf (tight, albeit straight) Uncle John's>Lovelight (incredible; on Ladies Disc#2) Sources: the Boswell-Smith sounds clearer than the Miller to me, if not a touch too EQ'd.

A great concert
What a show! This would've been so much fun to go to. And the Okie tune...what an F-U to the conservative population to have the hippiest of all bands

performing it.
